Alberto

The air was thick in the car as B.D. drove them in his truck down the dusty roads of Forest Hills. There was a clear elephant in the room, taking up more space than either could bear. He’d seen him take some pills, but what were they? As they drove, the elephant morphed into a heavy silence. It was as if Alberto could read what was on B.D.’s mind, and vice versa. But who was going to talk first? Could this silence even be broken?

It wasn’t any of his business, but he had seen B.D. take the pills and he must have known he’d have questions. He knew he shouldn’t have followed him, but he just couldn’t help himself.

B.D. cleared his throat a little too loudly, placing his hand on the car radio. “You like music?”

“Yeah,” Alberto said, forcing a smile. Maybe music would take his mind off of things for a while. At the very least, it would help to ease the tension. Garth Brooks blasted from the stereo. Better than nothing.

Alberto stared out the window as they drove; the snow-capped, never-ending tundra wasn’t enough to change his mood.

Garth Brooks’s voice did nothing to ease the tension, either. If anything, it only highlighted it. He had to ask. He couldn’t not know; it was eating him up inside.

Clearing his throat, he made sure to speak slowly and carefully, not wanting to confuse his words. “You feeling better? I saw you taking some pills in the bathroom.”

There was silence as B.D.’s jaw clenched shut. The color went out of his cheeks for a moment. It was obviously something he didn’t want to talk about.

He cleared his throat. “Yeah.” That was it? He wasn’t going to say any more? Alberto was more hurt than anything by this. He’d honestly thought that he had reached a point with B.D. where they could talk about this kind of stuff. But now he felt just like any other lay.

“Oh,” said Alberto. He sighed and looked out the window again. This was like pulling teeth. Maybe he’d try another approach.

B.D. rubbed the back of his neck. “I…uh…” He turned to Alberto and smiled. “Don’t worry about it. I’m fine.”

“Okay,” said Alberto, feeling a little more relieved. At least B.D. obviously cared enough to not leave him hanging in the lurch like that. He’d better not push the issue, just in case.

But still, he couldn’t help but wonder what the big deal was. So he was sick. Everyone got sick every now and then. Was he really so insecure that he couldn’t even handle people knowing when he was down? All these questions only made Alberto more curious.

B.D. rolled down the window. “Hot in here.” Strange, Alberto thought. It was below freezing outside and the heat wasn’t on yet. There was no way he could be hot. “You didn’t clean my bedroom today, did you?” asked B.D.

“No, not yet,” said Alberto. He sounded nervous. What the hell was he hiding?

His shoulders relaxed and he let out a soft moan.
